Introduction to Ferrochrome Alloy
Ferrochrome is an iron alloy mainly composed of ferro (Fe) and chromium (Cr), and usually contains a small amount of carbon (C), silicon (Si), phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S). It is an important alloying additive in the steel industry, mainly used in the production of stainless steel, heat-resistant steel and alloy steel, and can significantly improve the hardness, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance of steel.
Ferrochrome (FeCr) can be divided into high carbon ferrochrome (HC FeCr), medium carbon ferrochrome (MC FeCr), low carbon ferrochrome (LC FeCr) and ultra-low carbon ferrochrome (ULC FeCr) according to its carbon content.
Ferrochrome of different carbon grades has significant differences in use. Zhenan Metallurgy provides you with various grades of ferrochrome. Contact us for a free sample and quote!
We have great advantages in low carbon ferrochrome and ultra-low carbon ferrochrome. We have optimized the production process and technology to make the product quality better.
Types of Ferrochrome

High Carbon Ferrochrome

Medium Carbon Ferrochrome

Low Carbon Ferrochrome

Micro-carbon Ferrochrome
High carbon ferrochrome has a carbon content of 4-9%, a chromium content of usually 50-70%, and a silicon content of 1-3%. It is mainly used in the production of stainless steel, tool steel, die steel, and high-speed steel to enhance the performance of steel by increasing hardness and wear resistance.
High carbon ferrochrome is used for:
- Stainless steel: 430 series (decorative stainless steel, Cr≈17%).
- Wear-resistant materials: ball mill liners, excavator shovel teeth.
- Casting alloys: High chromium cast iron (Cr 15%~30%) is used for wear-resistant parts.
- Tool steel: Improves the hardness and wear resistance of cutting tools.

Features: High carbon content gives it strong deoxidation properties, suitable for applications requiring high hardness.
Note: The lowest price, suitable for industries that do not require strict carbon content.
The carbon content of medium carbon ferrochrome is 0.5-4%, and the chromium content varies greatly. It is mainly used for special steels that require a balance of carbon and chromium, such as some engineering steels or cast iron.
Medium carbon ferrochrome is used for:
- Heat-resistant steel: engine valves, turbine blades (Cr improves oxidation resistance).
- Mechanical structural steel: gears, bearings (Cr enhances strength and wear resistance).
- Medium carbon stainless steel: 410 series (Cr≈12%, C≈0.15%).

Features: Provides a balance of carbon and chromium, suitable for steels that have certain requirements for carbon content but are not strict;
Note: The price is moderate, and the production cost is slightly higher than that of high carbon ferrochrome.
Low carbon ferrochrome has a carbon content of less than 0.5% (usually 0.15-0.50%) and a high chromium content (60-70%). It is used to produce low carbon stainless steel and super alloys and is suitable for high purity applications.
Low carbon ferrochrome is used in:
- Ultra-low carbon stainless steel: 304L (C ≤0.03%), 316L (food processing equipment, chemical containers).
- Precision alloys: instrumentation components (requires high dimensional stability).
- Wire material: used for stainless steel welding to avoid carbon contamination of welds.

Features: High chromium and low carbon are suitable for high purity requirements, maintaining the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of steel.
Note: The production cost of low carbon ferrochrome is relatively high because it requires additional refining. However, its application value is high and the cost performance is the highest, especially in high-end industries.
Micro-carbon ferrochrome has an extremely low carbon content, usually less than 0.1% or 0.06-0.15%, and is used in scenarios that require extremely low carbon, such as certain stainless steels, acid-resistant steels, and heat-resistant steels.
Micro-carbon ferrochrome is used in:
- Nuclear industry: nuclear reactor inner wall materials (radiation corrosion resistance).
- Medical devices: scalpels, implants (high biocompatibility requirements).
- High-temperature alloys: aircraft engine blades (Cr improves high-temperature strength).

Properties advantages of Ferro Chrome
Excellent corrosion resistance
Mechanism: Chromium combines with oxygen to form a dense chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) protective film to prevent further oxidation or corrosion of the base metal.
Application: Stainless steel (such as 304 containing 18% Cr), chemical equipment, marine engineering materials.
High temperature oxidation resistance
Mechanism: The chromium oxide film remains stable at high temperatures, preventing the material from oxidizing and peeling off in high temperature environments (such as engines and boilers).
Application: Heat-resistant steel (such as automobile exhaust manifolds), gas turbine blades.
Intergranular corrosion resistance (low carbon/micro-carbon ferrochrome)
Mechanism: Low carbon content prevents chromium carbide (Cr₂₃C₆) from precipitating at the grain boundary, preventing intergranular corrosion caused by “sensitization”.
Application: Inner wall of nuclear reactor, medical equipment (such as surgical instruments).
High hardness and wear resistance
Mechanism: Chromium carbide (Cr₃C₂) in high carbon ferrochrome significantly improves the hardness of the material.
Application: Mining machinery (ball mill lining), agricultural machinery knives.
Good high temperature strength
Mechanism: Chromium element solid solution strengthening improves the creep resistance of the material at high temperature.
Application: High temperature parts of aircraft engines, heat treatment furnace components.
Adjustable mechanical properties
Mechanism: Balance the hardness, toughness and processing performance of the material by adjusting the carbon content of ferrochrome.
Examples:
High carbon ferrochrome: high hardness, used for wear-resistant castings;
Low carbon ferrochrome: easy to cold roll, used for stainless steel sheets.
High melting compatibility
Features: The melting point of ferrochrome (1450~1700°C) matches the melting temperature of molten steel, and it is easy to melt and evenly distribute during the steelmaking process.
Application: Alloying additive for electric furnace steelmaking and converter steelmaking.
Deoxidation and purification
Mechanism: Elements such as silicon in ferrochrome can assist in deoxidation and reduce oxide inclusions in steel.
Effect: Improve the purity of steel and improve mechanical properties.
Flexible composition control
Features: Different carbon grades (high carbon, medium carbon, low carbon, micro carbon) can be selected according to needs, and the ratio of chromium to carbon in steel can be accurately controlled.
Different types of ferrochrome (such as high carbon ferrochrome, low carbon ferrochrome and micro carbon ferrochrome) can be flexibly selected according to production needs to meet different requirements for chromium content in stainless steel or alloy steel production.
Example: Micro carbon ferrochrome is used for ultra-pure stainless steel (C≤0.03%) to avoid intergranular corrosion after welding.
