What Is Silicon Carbon Alloy?
Silicon Carbon Alloy — also widely known as High Carbon Silicon — is a special raw material used in steel mills, iron foundries, and metal casting factories all over the world. It is made by combining silicon and carbon at very high temperatures. The result is a powerful, cost-effective additive that replaces or supplements ferrosilicon and silicon carbide in many applications.
It is an alloy that contains both silicon and carbon in metallic form. The silicon content typically ranges from 65% to 72%, and the carbon content from 10% to 18%. These two key elements work together to do two important jobs at the same time: deoxidation (removing oxygen from molten steel) and carbon addition (raising the carbon level in the melt). This dual action is what makes silicon carbon alloy so useful and economical.
In simple terms: instead of buying two separate products — one for deoxidation and one for carbon boosting — you get both effects from one material. This saves cost, simplifies your process, and reduces waste. Steel mills and foundries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas are switching to High Carbon Silicon for exactly this reason.
Our silicon carbon alloy is produced in our own factory in China using premium raw materials and a carefully controlled production process. We do not source from third parties and mix grades — what you order is what we produce, every single time.

Why This Product Works So Well
Our Silicon Carbon Alloy has six core properties that make it one of the most valuable raw materials for steelmakers and foundry operators today.
Silicon is one of the most effective deoxidizers in steelmaking. Our alloy’s high Si content (65–72%) removes dissolved oxygen from molten steel quickly and cleanly, leading to higher-quality steel with fewer inclusions and porosity problems.
The carbon content (10–18%) allows precise carbon adjustment in the furnace. This is essential for producing different grades of steel and cast iron with consistent, repeatable carbon levels — without needing a separate carbon raiser.
Silicon carbon alloy melts and absorbs into the melt faster than many other alloys. This means less waste, more efficiency, and better control of your chemistry. Absorption rates typically exceed 85–90%.
Each batch is tested in our in-house laboratory before shipping. The chemical composition stays within a very tight range from batch to batch — giving you the consistency you need for efficient, predictable steelmaking operations.
Sulfur (S ≤ 0.05%) and Phosphorus (P ≤ 0.04%) are kept very low. These two elements are damaging to steel quality and mechanical properties. Our strict raw material sourcing ensures consistently clean product.
Compared to using ferrosilicon + carbon raiser separately, silicon carbon alloy offers significant cost savings — often 15–30% lower total additive cost. For large-volume buyers, this compounds into major annual savings.
Applications Across Multiple Industries
Silicon Carbon Alloy is a versatile raw material. Below are the key industries and processes where it delivers maximum value.
In EAF operations, Silicon Carbon Alloy is added to the furnace or ladle to simultaneously deoxidize the steel and adjust carbon content. EAF mills love this product because it streamlines the alloying process, reduces the number of additions needed, and lowers total raw material cost per ton of steel produced.
In basic oxygen furnace (BOF) steelmaking, silicon carbon alloy is used in the ladle during tapping and secondary metallurgy. It helps hit target chemistry faster and more consistently, reducing tap-to-tap time and improving furnace productivity — especially for structural steels and rebar.
Cast iron foundries use Silicon Carbon Alloy as an inoculant and carbon/silicon source in the melting furnace. It helps achieve the correct Si–C balance for consistent graphite formation, delivering better mechanical properties, more uniform hardness, and fewer casting defects.
Silicon carbon alloy is used as a reducing agent and raw input in the production of other ferro alloys such as ferromanganese and ferrochrome. Its high silicon and carbon content makes it effective at reducing metal oxides in submerged arc furnaces.
In stainless steel production, fine-grade silicon carbon alloy (0–5 mm or powder) is used during secondary metallurgy and AOD processes. It helps control final chemistry and reduces the use of more expensive alloying agents. Many stainless steel producers in Japan and South Korea rely on our fine-grade product.
Downstream rolling mills processing billets and wire rods use silicon carbon alloy to achieve consistent chemistry in the final product. This is especially common in the Middle East and Southeast Asia, where construction steel producers face constant cost pressure and need affordable, effective alloying solutions.
7 Key Advantages Over Traditional Additives
Many steel mills still use ferrosilicon + graphite electrode scrap as separate additions. Here is why Silicon Carbon Alloy is the smarter, more economical choice.
You add one material and get both deoxidation and carbon increase at the same time. Fewer addition steps, less work, and a simpler process for your furnace operators. Less complexity means fewer mistakes and better quality control on the production floor.
When you compare the price of silicon carbon alloy against buying ferrosilicon and carbon raisers separately, the savings are clear — typically 15% to 30% per ton of steel produced. For a mill producing 500,000 tons per year, this translates to hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual savings.
Silicon carbon alloy has a very good absorption rate into liquid steel — typically 85% to 92% for silicon and 80% to 88% for carbon. High recovery means less waste and more predictable results, allowing your metallurgists to control chemistry with greater confidence.
Because silicon carbon alloy is more efficiently absorbed, it generates less residue in the slag. Cleaner slag means easier furnace maintenance, lower refractory wear, and longer furnace lining life — an indirect cost saving that many customers appreciate after switching.
Silicon carbon alloy does not break down easily during storage or transport. It does not oxidize rapidly in open air, giving you flexibility to maintain a reasonable inventory without concerns about quality degradation over time.
We can adjust the Si-to-C ratio, particle size, and total composition to match your exact process requirements. We work with your technical team to design the right specification for your needs — something you cannot get from a standard catalogue product.
Using one efficient additive instead of two or three separate materials reduces total raw material consumption. Fewer additions also mean less dust and fume generation in the furnace area. As environmental regulations tighten globally, cleaner input materials offer both regulatory and reputational benefits.
How We Make It
We control every step of the manufacturing process in our own factory — from raw material selection to final packaging. No outsourced processes. No quality shortcuts.
We source only premium silicon carbide, coal, and petroleum coke from qualified suppliers. Every incoming batch is tested for chemical composition before entering our facility. Inconsistent raw materials are rejected — no exceptions.
Raw materials are proportioned by weight according to the target Si and C ratio for each production order. Our batching system is computer-controlled to ensure precise ratios batch after batch — the foundation of our consistent chemical composition.
Mixed materials are fed into electric arc furnaces and smelted at temperatures above 1,600°C. The high temperature ensures complete alloying between silicon and carbon. Our furnaces are monitored continuously for temperature and power consumption.
The molten alloy is poured into molds and allowed to cool slowly. After cooling, the solid alloy is crushed into required particle sizes — from fine granules (0–5 mm) to large lumps (50–100 mm) — using jaw crushers and vibrating screens.
Crushed material is passed through multi-layer vibrating screens to separate it into precise size fractions. Oversized and undersized material is recycled back into production. Only on-spec material moves forward to quality testing.
Samples from each production lot are analyzed in our in-house XRF and wet chemistry laboratory. We test for Si, C, Fe, Al, Ca, S, P, and moisture. Only lots that pass all specifications are cleared for packaging and shipment. A full test report is issued for every order.
Our Inspection & Quality Control System
We know that quality problems cost you far more than the price of the product. Our multi-stage inspection system protects your investment and your production process.
Every delivery of raw materials is sampled and tested in our lab before it enters production. Substandard inputs are returned to the supplier immediately. This is the first line of defense for consistent final product quality.
During smelting, furnace temperature, power load, and melt time are continuously monitored. Our quality control team takes samples at regular intervals to catch any drift in composition early. Process records are kept for full traceability.
After crushing and screening, a representative sample from each lot is analyzed for all key elements: Si, C, Fe, Al, Ca, S, P, and moisture. Only lots that meet the contracted specification receive a release certificate — included with every shipment.
We welcome independent inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas (BV), CCIC, or any reputable inspection company chosen by the buyer. We fully cooperate with inspectors and provide complete production records on request. Especially popular with European and Japanese buyers.
Before every container is sealed, we inspect the bags for damage, check the weight, and verify the correct grade and particle size are loaded. Photos and packing lists are sent to the buyer before the vessel departs. No surprises at your port of destination.
We provide a complete document set for every shipment: Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, Chemical Analysis Report, SGS Report (if requested), and MSDS. All documents available in English and can be legalized for Middle Eastern import requirements.
